Lamp Shade Recover

This lamp shade has been looking worse and worse every day
Not only is it dusty
and every attempt to wipe it clean just made it look dingier and dingier
I punctured a small hole in one side while cleaning it..

So, since necessity is the mother of invention
and I have looked all over for a fun lace lamp shade
I decided to make one out of an old shirt.
(I know its hard to imagine I could part with this beauty
circa 1995.)

I cut the inner fabric layer out

and slid the entire shirt over the lamp shade

I cut away the top and bottom and hot glued it to the inside of the shade
then took a black ribbon and covered the seams on the inside

I love lamp!

Owl Sweatshirts

I had found two cute pink sweatshirts
lined with warm fleece
at a garage sale earlier this summer

When the girls birthday rolled around I thought it would be chilly
and that their little birthday outfits would be covered
So, I decided to applique the number 1
on the back of the sweatshirts..

great..good plan.
except it was almost 70 the day of the party
and they could have worn shorts..

So, I took the applique off to continue to use the sweatshirts
but it left adhesive residue in the shape of a one.
So, I found a cute owl applique online

and decided to make little owl sweatshirts instead

not the best pictures..
but you get the idea..

a great way to use scrap fabric!

Shrooms

I found these great ceramic mushrooms at a garage sale
for 50 cents

I am turning the girls into an owl themed room
so I can feel like my one day investment of owl decor
was not for nothing..

Plus, owls are so cute!

so I primed it and spray painted in glossy white

then Russ hand painted the dots back on in
chocolate brown...
yes..I said Russ..
yes..he carries a gun and paints polka dots..
sorry ladies
HE IS ALL MINE!

LOVE.

Caramel Apples and Cupcakes..

(I can't take any credit for the apples..my friend Kelly made them..
and they turned out GREAT!)
YUM!

Russ and I made and decorated the owl cupcakes
the night before the party..

speaking of owls..I was able to find so many cute owls
in the few months before their party..
that I am now using as fall decor

Innovative as a Mother

So, a few weeks ago Lilly started chewing on the side of her crib
Elise already has a guard built into her crib
so she chews but is not tearing up the crib.

We went to Babies R Us after doing a little online research
and bought a gummi rail protector
It had good reviews, went on smoothly and at first we thought
GREAT. Problem solved.

Until about 3 days later when Miss Lils starting picking the gummi
rail off..and then off came the paint on the side of the crib

Super.

So, back to Babies R Us we went in search of something better.
They had a junky looking fabric crib protector
for $20.00 and it secured with Velcro.
which if this child could pull up glue
I am pretty sure she could handle Velcro

So, we decided to make something ourselves..

We got home and looked around..
Found some receiving blankets that we no longer use

and of course
zip ties

covered them with some ribbon
tied tight so little hands can't undo it

Can't beat a free solution!

Scrapbook Paper Party Garland

I used these garlands for the girls owl party..

There is a scrapbook store by our house that was going out of business.
I went there and got 6 pieces of Pebbles Twitterpated paper for $1.60 total.
I used some of the paper to wrap the favor jars and had left over to make a party garland.
SUPER EASY
I just used a sippy cup to trace circles
cut them out and hot glued two of them to a hemp cord
(I got a roll for $1.00 at the Dollar Store and it was more than enough for 3
garlands with plenty left.

I did this in an hour while chatting with R and watching TV
It really could not be easier.
The small owls are from a free owl invitation download
I was going to use these for their party but when I realized how
time consuming handwriting all of the invites would be
I decided to do a digital invite and repurupose these.

I took the scraps and used a hole punch to create confetti

Total Cost: $2.60 with plenty of cord left for many more garlands

Columbus Day

Did I mention how much I love federal holidays!
Counting the 2 days Russ stayed home last week while
Lilly and I had the flu
Sat and Sunday
He has been home 5 solid days!
I am LOVING it..
Two adults chasing two kids..
much better than one adult chasing two kids

I am pretty sure he will never be so happy
to be at work tomorrow...

For those following the 30 day challenge..
I am still doing it..
Since I am just continuing to
pray, meditate, read, work out,
and in general just sneak in whatever I can for myself..
I am not blogging about it..

Also, this week has been crazy with the flu
and the girls birthday party

Pictures to come soon!!!
(alright..fine..here is a sneak peak)
